Summer Figure Skating Program

Lake Placid Figure Skating 101

Welcome to Lake Placid, home of the oldest summer skating programs in the country! Here is a step-by-step guide to planning your summer skating experience.

  • Pick your freestyle and dance sessions. A list of sessions can be found on page 2. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: Depending on your coach’s schedule, your lesson may not be on the session that you choose. What you are signing up for initially is practice ice. You may only sign up for sessions that are at your current level. If you have a lesson on a different session or would like additional ice you may buy a punch card for an additional session. If you require more than the number of sessions allotted to your level, please see the arena office.
  • Make coaching arrangements. You can find a list of staff coaches on page 3. Look over the list and pick out a few that you think you might like to take from. Call a few of them to see if they would be a good fit for you and to see if they would be available. We also highly recommend getting advice from your coach at home.
  • Decide on housing. Most of the kids who come to the program stay at a boarding house for skaters just up the street from the arena. It is run by Marilyn Lysek – 518.523.1700. There are also quite a few kids whose parents come and stay with them at various hotels and rental properties.
  • Check out the off-ice group classes. The off-ice group classes are listed in this brochure. They are designed to enhance your on-ice training. Look at the class descriptions to get an idea about what you might like to try. Each class requires one off-ice ticket that can be purchased at the Box Office. You do not have to register in advance for these classes.
  • Register on Sunday. Sunday registration is from 3:00-5:00pm just outside the Arena Office & 1980 Rink on the main level of the building. You will be able to pick up your packet and ask any questions at that time. You will also receive a final schedule of all on- and off- ice classes for that week.
  • On-Ice Classes are also available. The on-ice classes will change from week to week. You will be e-mailed a schedule the week prior to your arrival and you will also receive one in your packet upon arrival. There is no need to sign up for these classes in advance. Each class requires one on-ice group class ticket which can be purchased at the Box Office.
  • Participate in activities! Freaky Fridays, Saturday Night Ice Shows, etc. are unique to Lake Placid and give kids a chance to show off what they have learned and give them a chance to perform! The group numbers and community service project also give kids the opportunity to make new friends and learn new things.
  • Try new things! Even if you don’t think you’ll like an on-ice or off-ice class, the group number, etc. try it out once and see. Don’t be nervous about being new to something – everyone was new their first time and you probably won’t be the only new one at class. But, you won’t know until you try!
  • Remember: No question or concern is silly! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
