sheffield speed skating oval

Named after James C. "Bunny" Sheffield, a member of the "Grand Slam" skating team from Lake Placid, which won the 1923 International Speed Skating Championships, and great promoter of Lake Placid as an international sports center, the Oval is most famous as the site of Eric Heiden’s legendary performance at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games. It was on this same ice surface that Heiden won an unprecedented five gold medals at a single Olympic Games.

The Sheffield Speed Skating Oval continues to be open to the public for both speed skating and public skating sessions during the winter months.

The oval is closed for the season. We will re-open December, 2019.
